Step UP to Work n' Study – Hospitality^TM is an Academic program with a Practicum, or paid internship, that offers multiple opportunities to link classroom learning to workplace experience.

Academic Component

Intensive study includes English Language Training/Cultural Training, Hospitality Workshops (English as a Second Language based), and focuses on language acquisition and practice in the context of conflict resolution, cultural competence, problem solving, teamwork, handling criticism, adaptability, motivation, and leadership skills, industry specific terminology and practices.

Program Options

We know that every student is a unique personality and each one may have very different goals, come to Canada with unique life experiences, and a slightly different idea about adventure and travelling and working abroad. With this in mind, we designed our Program to have options that match most personality types and desired experiences.

If you have previously travelled abroad, have work experience, and consider yourself very independent, you might prefer the wide variety of job options and locations in our Silver program. On the other hand, this may be your first experience in a foreign country, you may have very limited work experiences, and you prefer to have every single aspect of your work and study experince controlled, managed, and organized from beginning to end…in this instance, our Gold Program is likely best suited for you.

Poets Cove is located on Pender Island, one of Brirish Columbia’s spectacular, southern Gull Islands, Nestled between

Vancouver on the mainland, Victoria, on Vancouver Island. Pender Island is easliy accessible from Vancouver, Victoria

and Seattle. It is a 40 minute ferry ride from Victoria,  and ferry service is also available from Tsawwassen, just south of

Vancouver.

Interviewer : Can you please tell something about yourself,  where are you from,  your background

past work experience?

Olga: My name is Olga Shkarupa, I am Ukrainian. I have a Degree in Finance. Before coming to Canada I was working like

a junior accountant.

Interviewer: What were your duties, responsibilities (position) at Poet’s Cove? And what did you enjoy about

your duties?

Olga: Market Cashier/attendant…and most of all what I like is to make customers happy with my coffee drink. I am a real

barista now…you should try one of my drinks!

Interviewer : What are you doing for fun at Poet’s Cove ?

Olga: Hiking, biking, kayaking, and swimming,.. I can use almost all facilities of Poet’s Cove for free.

Interviewer: How was your team,  work environment,  relationship with co-workers?

Olga: My coworkers are my best friends, work or party; I love to spend time with them. We are a real team, always trying to 

help each other; we take care about each other. It is really important, when you are so far away from your home country.

Interviewer: How do you like your evening classes ?

Olga: I like my teacher. She is a great personality. She changed her lifestyle, to be closer to nature, and now she is a part and

great example of what we call "neighborhood watching community". She lived for a long time outside of Canada, so she knows 

how to be a foreigner.

Interviewer: What advantages did you get from your internship ?

Olga: First of all my English, my communication style improved a lot. I need it to have a great job in Ukraine. I think to spend

I think to spend 1 year in another country it is a great experience, it is going to stay with you forever. And of course my friends!

I have friends all over the world; I can’t imagine my life without them now.

Gold Program

We have a 6 and 12 month option for the Gold Program. All students in this program will begin their Intensive study at our

Vancouver Campus, and then continue their study throughout their program at one of our Resort  locations. Students in

this program are required to attend ongoing classes at our resorts during their Internship. Our World Class host resorts

have been carefully selected to offer students the greatest Internship experience possible. They are located outside of

Vancouver, in some of the most beautiful settings in Western Canada and offer students access to spectacular Resort

Facilities, as well as a unique Canadian lifestyle experience.

All internship placements are arranged based on language skills, general communication skills, cultural competences (all of

which we assess ongoing throughout the program), availability of specific job types during the year, as well as how well

students perform in their class. Previous work experience in hospitality is favorable for internship placements, but not

mandatory/necessary.           

We help students with all travel arrangements to their resort and assist in organizing accommodation at the resort

in staff accommodation, a hostel or an apartment.

Silver Program

We have a 6, 8 and 12 month option for the Silver Program. All students in this program will complete all their Intensive study

at our Vancouver Campus (50% of the Program duration),  and then spend the remainder of their time at their Internship.

Students in this program  are required to secure their own Internship placements, but will gain insight into the local hospitality

market through our Interview and Job Skills Seminars.
